The green revolution is underway!
Air transport accounts for 2.5% of CO2 emissions worldwide. It is both small compared to the automobile is the source of over 15% of these discharges, but much if one thinks much of this means of transportation in total travel.
Despite considerable efforts by manufacturers to the new generation of aircraft to save 20 to 30% of fuel compared to older models, the problem remains. Indeed, the sharp increase in traffic will cause a doubling of its share in total C02 emissions by 2050.
Not only the sector is unable to curb the growth of emissions, but it is also practically exempt from any contribution to the fight against global warming through the quota system of CO2, because of its financial weakness and its intense lobbying.
The aircraft was locked in a dead end long term because of his total dependence on oil.
But few adventurers who are challenged to fly without fossil fuels, now come to first results.
One of the most emblematic in this regard is that of the solar airplane Bertrand Picard, Solar Impulse (see photo left). It has just revealed its gem of technology and should soon start its test flights before achieving a first world tour.
Our project, called Project Sol’R, also aims to steal the solar but with a balloon (see photo right). Entirely designed and built by students from several schools and universities, this balloon is conducting its first trials.
These projects will not solve all the challenges facing the aviation, but they paved the way for new sustainable technologies.
Finally, I would conclude with this quotation from Bertrand Picard about his project but also summarizes our ambition.
“If an aircraft can fly day and night without fuel, powered only by solar energy, that nobody comes then claim it is impossible to do the same for vehicles, heaters, air conditioners or computers. Through this project, we are convinced that the pioneering spirit and political visions can change society and to overcome dependency on fossil fuels.”
